Deep Tissue Massage

deep tissue massage

Deep tissue massage works on deep levels of muscle. Sometimes called a Sports Massage which works on trigger points in a muscle, the techniques involved are as Swedish massage with the addition of techniques called Neuro Muscular Techniques.

This involves client feedback so that the therapist does not use too much pressure. On the client’s scale of 1 – 10 (10 being most uncomfortable) compression on a trigger point should register a 7 or 8 on the clients pain scale NOT MORE.

When the therapist finds a knot or trigger point, it is held at a 7/10 pressure on the clients pain scale for 30 secs. The clients breath is used to dissuade the neurology response of guarding the area. As the tenderness subsides to 3/10 the point is released and effleurage used to disperse any lactic acid which shows as redness or erythema around the area.

Stretching and homecare exercises are a vital part of this massage, as outcomes depend heavily on client involvement. The preferred website for stretching techniques is www.stretchingusa.com.

The use of compression during this technique makes for tender areas which are essentially bruised and may feel more tender for one to two days after a deep tissue treatment. Alittlemassage uses a PUREPRO concentrated arnica oil for this reason www.purepro.ie.
