A hot stone massage incorporates the use of hot volcanic stones to distribute heat and warm soft tissue prior to massage.
The heat from the stones encourages blood supply to the surface whereby the muscles relax and the fascia is loosened to allow for the therapists hands to work deeper quicker on soft tissue.
The room is at a comfortable temperature for the client. During the winter I sometimes put an electric under-blanket on the plinth to encourage the client to reach deeper stage of relaxation.
The stones are carefully scrubbed between treatments, and the massage oil used is a high quality water-soluble oil which is easier to remove from the surface of the stones. This treatment is not encouraged for a client with high blood pressure. The stones may be left overnight in the light of a full moon to re-charge on an energetic level.
